Come Out Incorporated is a social group which primarily aims to provide a social outlet, support and advocacy for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (GLBTQ) community through social events, activities and projects as well as a network of branches across Sydney, Rural NSW and contacts nationwide.
Our group started life on 1st September 1999 as the Canterbury-Bankstown District Gay & Lesbian Community Group (or CBD for short).
In 2005 we started to move into other areas, and quickly realised it was ludicrous to have a Sutherland branch of the Canterbury Bankstown Group, so we changed our name to "Rebellion" (Named after a dance we held in Bankstown 2005). Rebellion was a great name for a dance, but we had trouble marketing it as a group name, with many associating it with political activism. Not that we are adverse to standing up for our rights, but our primary purpose is that of a social nature, providing an outlet for socialising in local regions.
In 2006, our Adelaide branch suggested the name Come Out. All the branches agreed, so we officially adopted it.
We are based in suburbia (Canterbury-Bankstown, Hornsby/ Epping, Parramatta, Penrith, St George/Sutherland) and Country NSW (Parkes & Dubbo), simply because this is where our members live. There is no other sociological reason. We are a local community group run by locals for locals.
We are a non profit, non funded, community based, volunteer organisation that organises things like BBQ's, Dinners, Sports, Day Trips, Weekends Away, Dances, Bingo Nights, Trivia Nights and other similar events as suggested by the members.
We do not have any employees, we are run by volunteers or unpaid workers. We do not have councillors, because we are not a counselling service, however some of our coordinators and members have been trained and/or work in the field, so may be able to assist or at least refer you to other services.
We are not a coming out group, although we are quite often a persons first ever contact with the gay community. We offer support through social interaction and we will refer people to other services if further counselling or support is required. All our branches are similar, yet each has it's own distinct character, as defined by the location and demographic of the branch.
We value your feedback or suggestions on anything related to our organisation, website, projects or activities. We invite you to come along to any of our events or become involved with any of our branches across Sydney and country NSW or contact us to start one in your area... Anywhere in Australia.
We tend to think of the name more as an invitation:
