Parkes NSW, located on the Australian transcontinental railway line, and the Newell Highway linking
Victoria to Queensland, has a population of approximately 10,500.
Parkes hosts an annual Elvis Presley Festival in early January, with over 60 events held over five days.
The festival attracts more than 6,000 visitors to the town.
Main tourist attractions are the Radio Telescope, Bushmans Hill, and the War Memorial Lookout., the
Goobang National Park, and Peak Hill which features an Open Cut Mine.
A good crowd was in attendance for the launch of the Parkes branch back on Saturday 17th June 2006,
at which a number of positive and exciting projects and events were raised and discussed by the locals.
Unfortunately since then Roger has left Parkes to pursue career interests, and Ian has been forced to
step down due to ill health. As such the Parkes branch is currently looking for a coordinator.
It would be nice to appoint someone before the Elvis festival so we can organise something for any gay
and lesbian visitors to the town, but also for the locals.
At the moment we are building our branch mainly by word of mouth and being involved with the branches
in nearby Forbes, Orange and Dubbo
The Parkes branch is open to all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) people,
as well as their families and friends who live, work, visit or are somehow connected to the town and/ or
region.
Below are copies of press reports featuring the Parkes branch, we even made it into the local newspaper
(The Champion Post)... Can you believe it??
